Learning healthcare systems

The work of the stroke research team is inspired by the concept of a ‘learning healthcare system’ that has been pioneered in the USA.

A learning healthcare system is a very large database that:
• contains information about patients from different sources (eg hospital records) and allows different sets of data to be brought together;
• enables this information to be used by researchers to develop better treatments or services;
• allows healthcare professionals to access the results of that research to inform their care decisions;
• enables commissioners to access information about patients to help them plan services to meet the needs of local people.
