Engineers define the systems approach to health and care improvement in a CLAHRC related study

The NIHR CLAHRC for the East of England’s Patient Safety Theme, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal College of Physicians and the Academy of Medical Sciences, has produced a new report that seeks to define a Systems Approach to  health and care improvement.

The framework presented by the report has been informed by a large group of experts, including systems engineers, healthcare professionals, quality improvement experts, managers and patient representatives. In summary, the report suggests that a true systems approach combines consideration of People, Systems, Design and Risk in a ordered and well-executed manner.

Professor John Clarkson, the PI of the CLAHRC EoE Patient Safety Theme and Lead author of the report said, “Making systems that work relies on asking questions to understand the context of the challenge, design a competent system, deliver this system into practice and to sustain its utility and use.” The report is available for download here: Engineering Better Care
